by Teresa Gotay on January 24, 2009

For the traveler who is just as passionate about their lover as they are about traveling, we searched for the most unique locations to spend Valentine’s Day. Its often difficult to find the most romantic spot that isn’t Paris or a luxurious beach in  the Bahamas, so we broke it down to categories: Romantic, Adventurous, Scenic, Cultural and Party Animal; to cater to those couples (or singles) are looking for a great getaway. After all, this Valentines Day is on a Saturday, so no excuses ladies and gents!

3. Scenic Getaway- Romantic Road, Germany Various locations in Southern Germany

For the romantic couple looking for a quiet, but scenic route on Valentines Day, the Romantic Road is a
true path to romance. It is a term used for a highway in Southern Germany between Würzburg and
Füssen. What will you see on this journey? Well, it is the towns that make the Romantic Road a
Valentine’s Day attraction. The medieval villages along the way make for a heart warming retreat back
into time. Buses leave from Munich or Frankfurt, or you can rent a car and enjoy the splendid view at
your own pace. At the end of the road is Neuschwanstein Castle; right out of the fairy tales. It is a 19th
century Bavarian castle; one of the top tourist destinations in Germany.

4. Cultural Getaway- White Day in Japan

Often, we wonder how other countries celebrate holidays. In Japan, Valentines Day still follows traditional rules of affection and candy giving, but there is a twist. Instead of the male doting on the female, it is the lady that presents chocolates to the object of her affection. They can also give them other gifts to show their interest. These gifts of chocolate are put into into two types: giri choco (obligatory chocolate) and honmei choco (chocolate for the man the woman is very serious about). Giri choco is given by women to coworkers and male friends. On March 14th, exactly one month after Valentine’s Day, men who received gifts return the favor with a more expensive box of chocolate and other treats. So if you’re looking for an interesting twist on Valentines Day, or you want to reverse the roles, check out White Day in Japan.
