Michael, your advise about extra spending is magnificent. I realize that most of your writings and post are based on first hand experience and recent happenings. And THAT is why this website is so special and UNIQUE.

A comment on #4:<br>YES pay with cash as much as possible and ONLY take out cash from an ATM or inside a bank, never exchange or take out money from a money exchange vendor with your credit card. Most often, the minute you leave the area, they are using your card for their benefit. Although, you get your money back or you have credit security. Avoiding the hassle is always the best security.

There are some great tips on here, especially number three! My wife and I are currently studying abroad in Ireland. Since we're staying in one place, we brought cash with us and opened a local bank account to save on the fees.

Every time we used our debit card, it was going to cost us about 5% of the purchase price, plus a flat fee of $5 or so. :O Even just withdrawing from the ATM, this was going to cost us a bundle over our time here!

Always bring more cash than you think you'll need.
