Backpacker Stereotypes

by Teresa Gotay on February 15, 2009

NOTE: It seems as if the images have went down and the website is now under works. That’s a shame really because the images were so clever and funny.

Not all backpackers are alike. We all have the mentality to travel and save money along the way, but we are all unique in our own distinct way. Sometimes, when you think of a backpacker, what comes to mind? A sweaty grungy 20 something year old with a big orange backpack? A group of young ladies with matching North Face  jackets and no makeup on? Sometimes people don’t have a good idea what a backpacker is. There are not many movies about backpacking or television shows that give us some ideas for those not familiar with it. Well my fellow backpackers, I would never call any backpacker the same.

Martin Peers a cartoonist,  does a hilarious job of describing the “typical stereotypes” of backpackers. His cartoon series called: “Travel Cartoons- Backpacker Stereotypes” delivers a comical description of the kind of backpackers you may come across. I can’t begin to explain how funny I found his cartoons, especially about North Americans and the Adrenaline junky. Hopefully, no one gets too offended by the stereotypes; they are taken with a good sense of humor. Judge for yourself fellow backpackers and see if you know anyone that fits these silly stereotypes.

To put ourselves as backpacker stereotypes, as much as Skylab would want to say I could be the girly girl, I’d most likely be the domesticated one, while he is absolutely the adrenaline junky!

Do you think there are any stereotypes he missed? Let us know!

We want to thank Martin Peers for his comical depiction of backpackers! Check out more of his cartoons, including a travel cartoon at his website.

We hope to see you there!

  • Well done! I think you've pretty well hit 'em all.
  • Those are great! I guess my wife and I fall underneath the categories of "the Couple" and "domesticated".
We have definitely run across a number of those stereotypes already!
