National Geographic features a month long series updated daily of global cities that celebrate Christmas. Did you know there is a store called “The Christmas Shop” in London that sells Christmas memorabilia all year round? Or that in Paris there is a free open air ice skating rink at Hôtel de Ville?
They did a great job at profiling what other countries do for Christmas and I can’t wait to see what countries they will feature as December comes to an end.
Even though they already featured New York City (Thanks!), Here is the Art of Backpacking’s list of how we celebrate Christmas in New York City
1. Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree- Now, we know you tried going to see the tree at the lighting (We did too and learned our lesson) Take your time after work or on a weekend to see the spectacular green tree. It is green because they use LED lights that save electricity!
2. Ice Skating at Wollman Rink- I spent many class trips at this rink and it is my favorite in New York City. It is hidden away deep in New York at Central Park South (59th Street) and 6th Avenue. You could recreate the scene and Serendipit
y or even propose an engagement at a whopping starting price of $1,500. Or you could just ice skate here for much less.
3. Saks Fifth Avenue Lightshow- If you’re by Rockefeller Center, go across the street to Saks and catch the light show! 50 decorative snowflakes sparkle Fifth Avenue to a Christmas tune every few minutes so don’t miss it!
