For decades, relations between the United States and Cuba have been less than admirable. Today, Cuban Americans celebrate a small victory as President Obama announced that he was willing to open the door toward greater relations with Cuba.
Although the trade embargo still remains, the new Democratic President hopes to loosen tight relations with the Communist nation. Under his plan, Cuban-Americans can now visit Cuba frequently, send gifts and as much money as they want, as long as the recipients are not senior government or Communist Party officials.
Even if this is a small step, what do you think about this new plan? Is it the start of changing history and improving a bitter battle between countries that are pretty much neighbors? At Art of Backpacking, we are delighted that President Obama is even taking the first initiative to improve these relations. Families that have been apart for years and want to help each other can now do so; a basic human necessity now brought back to life. It is the people of both countries who are affected so much; not the tourism, the trade or the politics, but the people who would like some kind of normalcy. Hopefully, this is a stepping stone towards greater advancements in their relations.
