Money Grab

@Steve Wampler

For myself, it would be a quick and easy decision to pack my bags and journey off to the wild. All my life, I’ve vowed and longed to see the world and all of its jewels. I’ve been fortunate enough to do some traveling of my own but often, life’s limitations hold me back at the moment from backpacking. But alas, nothing will stop me from completing this goal.

So lets throw in a new variable. Lets say you did win a million dollars, or any large prize amount that would allow you to travel. Money is obviously not a limitation factor in this equation. If I had a million dollars, I would see every part of the world I possibly could get my hands on. The world would be my lemon and I’d make tons of lemonade. I would continue to live a pretty frugal lifestyle; having most of my money in the bank and budgeting myself accordingly, but once in a while, lavishing and enjoying the fact that I am abroad.

For me, its the challenge of self budget and self control that is appealing. The money would go to the hard and expensive parts of backpacking such as transportation. Once in a while a hotel would be dandy, but its experiencing the life adventures with other backpackers that I would miss out by not being in a hostel. Sufficed to say, even with a million dollars, I’d just make sure I’m comfortable, safe and doing every adventurous and fun experience I possibly could!

Put yourself in these shoes: What if you won a million dollars?

How would you go about traveling? Would you remain on a backpackers budget or go buck wild and spend it all?

  • @artofbackpackin Even if money were no object, I'd definitely keep the lifestyle of a backpacker as a part of much of my travels! I don't have anything against a 5-star hotel, but I love the sense of community at a hostel. Some of the most memorable adventures I've had have been with total strangers that I hooked up with on the spur of the moment as fellow backpackers.
    Much of my money would go to the non-profits that I support, but as some have commented, having a nice little house in a few places around the globe wouldn't be a bad idea either!
  • Agreed. I love the community hostels have. It's certainly made my journey a crazy adventure. Heck I'd still couchsurf as well with a million dollars and stay with the locals.
  • Agre with Trish! hahaha
  • if i had a million dollars, i assure you i would not be living out of a backpack. i'd be staying in the nicest hotels i could find!

    to each his own, as they say!

    If I won a huge ridic jackpot like 400 million dollars, I might stay in a few more nicer hotels. Or heck, just buy a house in every city I love HAHA!
  • I would certainly travel much slower and emerce myself in every culture.
    Comon winning numbers!!!
  • Ahh a villa in Tuscany! That sounds so relaxing!!! I'd spend so much time in every city and indulge myself too =)
  • I've certainly played with this one in my head before...

    I think, give the absence of needing to work, I would travel much slower. I'd set up residences somewhere for awhile, then eventually move on and live elsewhere. Rent out a villa in Tuscany and spend my days exploring Mediterranean Europe for awhile, then eventually pick up and head to Mexico for example.

    It would be nice!
