The mountains of Wudang (or Wudangshan) can be found in the northwestern area of the Hubei Province in The People’s Republic of China and is part of the larger Daba Mountain Range. Its best known for the ancient Taoist monasteries that reside there (the area is considered the birthplace of Taoism).

On the left I’d like you to meet Yuan Da, born August 3rd, 2006 and raised in Chengdu Panda Base. It seemed a sin to travel all the way to China and not see a panda. It was my sole purpose for visiting the city of Chengdu.

A visit to China isn’t complete without tasting Baijiu. Unofficially, it’s the national drink. The beverage is a Chinese distilled alcohol. The clear color can easily be mistaken for water (I’ve done that mistake before). At about 80 to 120 proof, or 40-60% alcohol by volume, it burns right through and you will feel every drop it going down.

I’m on a sleeper train ride from Chengdu to Kunming with three other backpackers for over eighteen hours. Were casually playing card games near our beds when suddenly a group of five Chinese men approach us. Clueless as to what they want, they take a camera out and in hand gestures politely ask for pictures with us

Tiger Leaping Gorge is considered one of the deepest gorges in the world going as far down as 62 miles (100 kilometers) and is just a few hours away from the city of Lijiang in the Yunnan Province. It’s part of the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Legend has it that a tiger had leaped across the river to the other side, hence the name. The gap across the river is fairly large for any animal to make across. It’s also well known for it’s intensive hike to catch some stunning views.

I couldn’t help it. This is the second video were featuring of Without Borders and for a good reason. I’ll be going back to China in the end of August and this video got me excited again for my upcoming trip. It didn’t seem to take long for them to find something to record in China. Watch as Chad attempts to make some noodles and somehow tries to communicate with them.

With 70 million expected visitors in the next 6 months, Expo 2010 in Shanghai is going to be a big deal. So if you will be in China, and are not planning a day or two for a visit, you will be missing out. The Expo, or World’s Fair as it is also known, is a chance every 5 years for the countries of the world to come together and put their best foot forward, highlighting their cultures, natural treasures and in the case of Expo 2010 different aspects of environmental sustainability and green technologies. The spectacle in China does not stray from these past traditions and most exhibitors at least play lip service to environmental sustainability.

As Michael, our founder here at Art of Backpacking reaches his first month of backpacking, we’d like to Congratulate him on this grand voyage of his! Planning his trip in less than a year and selling everything he could to save every dollar for his trip has paid off as he travels from China, his first country, to his next, which will be Laos. As he transitions from his lifestyle back home to one abroad, it seems to be going very well!
