If you made a resolution to travel in 2010, you’ve probably been searching the internet for trip ideas, travel information or travel deals. Congratulations to anyone who has made the decision to embark on a new journey. Whether it is your first time backpacking or getting familiar with the heavy hitters in the travel community, it’s important to recognize others who have traveled successfully.
Not only is it an inspiration, but it gives us assurance and motivation to live without boundaries in a world with no limit. With a year under our belt here at Art of Backpacking, we’ve been fortunate enough to network to other great travel websites and the faces behind the blogs. Their stories have kept us coming back and we feel these are travel personalities any traveler should know for 2010.
The Planet D: Canada’s Adventure Couple
What is a better blog than a romantic journey between a married couple? Considering traveling with a spouse could be an obstacle, adventure couple Dave Bouskill and Debra Corbeil prove that love can travel for miles. Married for 11 years, they have traveled 5 continents and continue to update a successful blog.
If you find them to be familiar, you might have heard of the Planet D. Check out their extensive media section, which links to other media outlet exposure. They are gaining recognition for their personal journey and we couldn’t be any happier that they are able to share their journey with us!
You can spend days on their website going through archives of various topics from advice on couple travel to Indian masseuse therapy. There is a lot of love put into this website and we absolutely love their story, their journey and their blog!
Twenty-Something Travel: Why wait to see the world?
What attracted us to Twenty-Something Travel was the name itself. We are both Twenty-Something induviduals and what better than to relate to someone from our generation.
Stephanie, the blog owner calls herself: “A girl who can not sit still.” After finishing school and relocating to London, she spent time backpacking around Europe. Upon returning to the states, she currently works to save money to get herself back into the life of a traveler.
Until then, she maintains a successful blog which was featured in Lonely Planet. Keeping up with her blog is exciting as it is. Her blog is constantly updated and filled with interesting and resourceful articles. What we like most about Twenty-Something Travel is the aspiration to motivate other travelers. As travelers, we want to tell the world that hostels are okay and you shouldn’t wait to travel. Luckily, those questions can be answered thanks to Twenty-Something Travel.
A Pair of Panties and Boxers: “Traveling is food for my soul…”
If the title didn’t get you into the site, hopefully we can assure you that her blog will keep you looking for more. (And if you want to know where the name came from, you’ll have to visit her site.) Blog owner Monica is a New Yorker (Like us!) who currently works as an Online PR Account Executive. But her life long job is a traveler. You can see in her stories and photographs that she lives, eats and breathes travel.
She is a prominent and upcoming travel blogger who I have literally found all over the travel community. I have not only worked with her through Art of Backpacking, but on my former position at TripCrazed. It goes to show that when you have a passion for travel, the world will hear about it.
From her adventures in China facing squat potties to a gorgeous recollection of a day trip to Toledo, we wonder where she will go next! We love to drool at the gorgeous photographs she captures as well. Our favorite part about her blog are her inquisitive eye for details. Reading her blog gets your heart racing as if you are right there in the traveler’s seat.
Sosauce: Authentic Travel Community for Travel Geeks
Right off the bat: Two of my favorite things about this site is the mention of sauce and geeks. My favorite phrase is saucy and I love sauce. (What can you expect when you’re companion is Italian?) When you think of travelers, you think of valiant, adventurous risk takers going through wild jungles. Of course, we all know anyone can be a traveler. And we love the term travel geeks: Because that is what we are!
Sosauce is a refreshing travel community dedicated to open minded travelers. They are a team of writers who all agree on one thing: TRAVEL! Read each personal story and you’ll understand why Sosauce is one of our favorite blogs. The blog is interactive with a trip planner, travel guides and the ability to create your own photo album and journal.
It is a travel community within a travel community. The personal touches from travel reviews in Bolivia to a personal encounter in Ukraine, it’s easy to fall in love and get caught up with the travel geeks on Sosauce.
Brook Silva-Braga: Bringing the travel world to the big screen
If you’ve ever wanted to introduce someone to the world of Backpacking, you might want to give them this name. Brook Silva-Braga has brought light to the backpacking and travel community.
He is an American documentary film producer known for his popular documentary, A Map for Saturday in which he produced, directed and starred. It is quite possibly the best example of backpacking in the media. It focuses on the idea that traveling is like waking up everyday on a Saturday morning, the freedom and liberty of no constrictions and the ability to roam free.
After quitting his job with HBO in 2005, he spent almost a year traveling around the world with a video camera recording his priceless adventures. The 90 minute documentary shows the personal highs and lows of a backpacker navigating around the world. It opens your eyes to the concept of budget long term travel abroad, especially through his encounters with other backpackers.
Fortunately, he also continues his travels and produced a second documentary film called One Day in Africa. It is a deeper and heartwarming documentary following the lives of 6 individuals in different parts of Africa. It sheds light to the struggles and changes in a region not often discussed. Both films should be in every travelers DVD collection. We personally admire the courage he took to not only travel, but the doors it opened for him as a traveler.
We thank all the mentioned blogs for not only inspiring us as a travel blog, but for sharing their stories and for being a part of the travel community.
