Where Is Your Place Of Solitude?

Breathe in and breathe out. Its been a long day, you’re home sick and you just want some time to yourself to unwind. A place to escape the harsh reality of everything that comes with travel. If you have to unpack your backpack ONE MORE TIME you are going to lose it! Relax! Take it easy and think about that one place you can let go and be one with your thoughts. Where is that place for you?

Solitude : Loneliness is the poverty of self; solitude is the richness of self. by AgniMax.

My place of solitude is on moving transportation. For some reason, the minute a train or bus starts moving, I look outside my window and my stream of consciousness slowly slips into serenity. I’m able to focus on my thoughts and translate it into things I want to think about, rather than feeling scatterbrained. Often, I get very emotional and sometimes tear at the tranquility I feel, depending on what I am thinking about.

One person I know finds solitude in the shower. Its one of the only places you can be absolutely alone with your thoughts. The rush of water is almost like a cleansing ritual and helps to start the day on a fresh note.

You might find solitude in an open meadow, by a fountain or on top of a mountain.

Where is your place of solitude? How does it help you as a traveler?

  • I find solitude in taking a nap outside. Sounds a little strange but I napped on the deck of my boat while traveling in Antarctica, in a mossy patch just off a hiking trail in Argentina, out on the beach in Indonesia and Ghana, and in the grassy fields of France. Frankly I didn't realize I enjoyed resting outdoors so much until I thought about your question.

I love my lazy hours outdoors in the US too, but seem to find solace more easily in NYC by riding somewhere by bus, train, plane, car...it doesn't matter as long as the vehicle is moving.

Or there's always a good long run to calm my mind.

I love it when I'm on top of mountains, on top of everything else (okay not really everything).

This is a good post. I actually love it also whenever I'm on moving transportation. It just lets your mind wander off and no one spoils it (except when there's a crying baby on board)...
  • Thanks! I agree! A crying baby can spoil the moment!
